Happy New Year all! For my first post of the year I’ve decided to skip past the resolutions and life changing ambitions and take a much simpler and realistic approach to these new beginnings. I honestly have never been one for making (or sticking to) new years resolutions, and find that the best way to start the new year is to recharge from the holidays and get back to the basics. I’m fairly regimented about my daily schedule throughout the year, but my work outs, tasks around the house, and errands tend to get thrown slightly off-kilter during the holidays, so come January 2nd (New Years Day is for sleeping and eating) I get my workout and the boys’ napping schedules realigned, the house cleaned up, kitchen re-stocked, and get cracking on the to-do list. As I’m running out the door to walk the dog, get to Bikram yoga on time, stop at the market to pick up lunch, and then take the boys to the playground after their nap, I plant my favorite coats, bags, hats, gloves, and scarves by the door so that I can grab and go without leaving the house looking like a hot mess. NYE Style On the Double
And just like that Christmas has come and gone and the New Year celebrations are days away. Now that I’m past my roaring twenties (thank you twin toddlers) I am much more keen on low key New Years Eve festivities typically consisting of a good run with the Mister, our dog, and the boys in the stroller followed by a fondue dinner and bubbly in the evening. That said, there’s much to be said for an intimate NYE gathering with close friends and family, not to mention it would be completely nonsensical to turn down a good invitation on the one night of the year when it is practically expected to get all dolled up and perhaps drink one (or three) too many cocktails. Whether you’re headed for a ritzy night out or watching the ball drop from your couch, read on for my favorite styling tips and shopping picks for New Years Eve. Read More
Wardrobe Hero: the Holiday Shift Dress
With Christmas just a week away and New Years Eve around the corner I felt it neccesary to feature my wardrobe hero for the holidays– the shift dress. In the right color and fabric with a sharply tailored cut, the shift dress is perfect for Christmas dinner at your in-laws, happy hour with the girls, a dinner date with your guy, or a holiday party at the club. I love the simplicity of the shift dress’s silhoutte because it allows daintly details like tea length sleeves, a tulip hem, lush fabrics and rich colors to stand out creating an understatedly classic and elegant look. Winter Skincare On the Double
My philosophy on makeup and beauty in general has always been less is more. I’d like to pretend that’s only because I don’t like the feeling of heavy make up on my skin, but it may also have to do with the fact that I’m hopeless at applying makeup. A few years ago I took an online quiz to test my knowledge and overall know how on make up and my results were basically “You are such an idiot about make up that you shouldn’t even be allowed to buy it.” Undeterred, I’ve dabbled in experimenting with an assortment of products and techniques that go for the no-make up look (and feel,) but ultimately have come to the conclusion that the best formula for good make up and a fresh face is a stellar skin routine. If your skin is out of sorts whatever make up you try applying on top just won’t look good. And of course, once you finally assemble your perfect skincare routine, the seasons change and you’re back at square one. Recently finding myself in this predicament, I’m sharing my winter skincare essentials that have rejuvinated and brightened the desert that was my face. Read More
Black and White Christmas
Besides decorating the tree, spending countless hours buying and wrapping gifts, and eating and drinking my body weight in cookies and champagne, Christmas movies are without a doubt what really gets me feeling all sorts of merry during the holiday season. Seriously though, growing up it was practically a requirement in my house that we watch Christmas Vacation at least five times during the month of December, and since I’m being honest it was more like ten… So in keeping with my relentless desire to relate my life to all of my favorite movies, come on you know you do too 🙂 , I see no reason why this completely unrealistic and perhaps unhealthy habit need not apply at Christmas. While I love Family Stone, Love Actually, and Elf as much as any pure blooded millennial American woman, while cozied up on the couch watching It’s a Wonderful Life the other night I couldn’t help but be inspired by the beauty of its black and white simplicity.
