Besides decorating the tree, spending countless hours buying and wrapping gifts, and eating and drinking my body weight in cookies and champagne, Christmas movies are without a doubt what really gets me feeling all sorts of merry during the holiday season. Seriously though, growing up it was practically a requirement in my house that we watch Christmas Vacation at least five times during the month of December, and since I’m being honest it was more like ten… So in keeping with my relentless desire to relate my life to all of my favorite movies, come on you know you do too 🙂 , I see no reason why this completely unrealistic and perhaps unhealthy habit need not apply at Christmas. While I love Family Stone, Love Actually, and Elf as much as any pure blooded millennial American woman, while cozied up on the couch watching It’s a Wonderful Life the other night I couldn’t help but be inspired by the beauty of its black and white simplicity. Just as the Seven Sisters’ campus casuals spurred a style revolution forever changing the attitudes and wardrobes of young America women, their smart weekend getaway look had an equally alluring and influential effect on the makings of American preppy style.

Putting themselves on the map with their chic “borrowed from the boys” inspired wardrobes, come Friday, Seven Sisters girls underwent a style transformation for a more polished version of their weekday campus classics. The Seven Sisters schools earned the nickname “Suitcase Colleges” because every Friday most students packed a suitcase and hit the road for a weekend filled with proms and sporting events at neighboring men’s colleges, parties and dinners in New York City and Boston, or hit the ski slopes and hiking trails at East Coast resorts. Now that fall weather has finally come to Washington, I’ve started switching out my spring/summer and fall/winter wardrobes. Seeing as we’re still having stray 70 degree days here and there the name of the game for me is tee shirts and layering. The Mister just got back from a work trip to Texas and as always came bearing gifts including this souvenir from Austin, the live music capitol of world.
