“Winter, Meet Spring”

“Winter, Meet Spring”

If you couldn’t tell, I am ready for spring and wearing all of the colors to prove it. I’ve been in quite the color kick lately and I truly think playing around with colors is one of the best ways to get creative with your existing closet. It’s not about going crazy and throwing on every color you own, but more so appreciating and illuminating the simple beauty in each color. Colors can, and have, been done in so many ways, and while there are certain shades that don’t require much work (hi, red <3 ) sometimes it takes a bit of refinement by way of colorblocking and textural contrasts to really make a color sing. Expanding on the sentiments in my last post of pairing winter and springtime colors for transitional weather, this time around I’m taking a more textural approach to mixing and matching winter and spring aesthetics. Wearing it Now: Marigold and Pink

Wearing it Now: Marigold and Pink

Every year in August when it’s practically too hot and humid to go outside I long for cold winter nights, snow days, and layers upon layers of chunky knits, wool coats, and tall boots, but come February my wind burnt cheeks, chapped lips, and freezing toes have just about had enough. I actually do really enjoy piling on the layers and getting bundled up to go outside, but thoughts of idyllic balmy spring weather (and being able to go outside without freezing my bum off) make me eager for warmer days.

Living in DC you quickly learn how to dress for in-between weather because the transition between seasons in the District is wildly unpredictable. The turnover from winter to spring is particularly fickle, putting the city in a state of limbo going back and forth between warm and cold days until the buds are blooming and spring finally sets in. It’s easy to get caught up in spring fever and all the florals tromping up and down the runway, but whether you like it or not you may very well be holed up under all of your layers for a few more weeks (at the very least.) On the upside, taking a spring attitude to your winter wardrobe by way of creative color combinations is all you need to hit refresh on your winter favorites.   Read More

Un Fille en Rouge

Un Fille en Rouge

I’ve never been that into Valentine’s Day, but seeing as I am always into red why not embrace the Hallmark holiday simply for an excuse to become une fille en rouge and eat even more chocolate than usual? It’s all in the name of romance, right?

As a powerhouse hue, red is always a go-to color for me. Be it a simple splash or full on head to toe dowsing, in my opinion you really can’t go wrong with red. For color-lovers and neutral minimalists alike, this color can be statement making or understatedly chic. I think what I love so much about this color is its versatility and effectiveness.

Pops of Red

Pops of Red

I don’t have a favorite color per say, but shades of red and blue are hands down my favorite statement colors to wear. I’m not playing favorites here, but because Valentine’s Day is fast approaching I’m putting the spotlight on the color du jour. Classic, feminine, sexy, and powerful, red is perhaps one of the most impactful colors to have in your wardrobe. No matter the item, adding a pop of red adds an understated touch of femme fatale and instantly upgrades a look. Not to mention, bright pops of red are going to be trending this coming season, so be on the lookout for some fresh inspo during SS17 fashion month. Read More

Wardrobe Hero: The Statement Winter Coat

Wardrobe Hero: The Statement Winter Coat

I spend a lot of time outside, and during the colder winter months I’m almost always wrapped up in a coat when I go out. So far this winter in D.C. has been extremely mild, with occasional days that I can get away with just a vest, and that one blissful 70 degree day the other week when I was out in a t-shirt. Rare fluctuating weather aside, if you live or travel anywhere that gets quite cold during winter having an army of hardworking coats is essential. Whenever I travel anywhere in the winter I always bring along a statement coat and pack my entire suitcase based on that coat.

My family took a trip to Pittsburgh, PA right before Christmas where it was colder than cold and my statement coat was the perfect topper to layer over my daytime chunky knits and dresses in the evening. Other than keeping me toasty warm, what I really love about coats is how well they can complete an outfit and the statement coat is an all star in the third piece game. If you’re not familiar with the third piece styling rule, it’s a concept of adding a third component (other than shoes and bag) to your top and bottom to complete a look. This can be a blazer, vest, coat, hat, or scarf. If you’re keen on basics, but want to add interest to your outfit incorporating a third piece is the way to go, and an elegant and vibrant colored wool coat is the perfect solution during the colder winter months.
