Now that fall weather has finally come to Washington, I’ve started switching out my spring/summer and fall/winter wardrobes. Seeing as we’re still having stray 70 degree days here and there the name of the game for me is tee shirts and layering. The Mister just got back from a work trip to Texas and as always came bearing gifts including this souvenir from Austin, the live music capitol of world. Knowing my affinity for a good tourist tee, this Willie Nelson gem is a fun new addition to my fleet of tee’s.
We typically have a good 2-3 weeks of idyllic fall weather here, which is the last chance to comfortably go bare legs, so it was a good occasion to take this corduroy mini skirt out. I really love this skirt for a number of reasons. First, the “masala chai” color which is a very rich shade of brown with reddish tones. I also love the a-line cut and length of the skirt, giving it a flattering and modest fit for a mini. When you’re going bare legs in fall, it’s normally best to go with a tall boot to give your legs a bit more warmth. For this outfit I chose these brown leather riding boots to add to the monochromatic look. With monochrome dressing, the best way to create a luxe, effortless look is to layer in textures. In this case cotton, corduroy, and leather in varying shades of cream, red, and brown make for an easy textural combination.
One of my favorite styling tricks for monochrome dressing is adding a touch of black/white print. Simple black/white prints such as this gingham button up shirt give a slight break to the monochrome while also enriching the shades of creams and browns. A Button up collared shirt left undone can serve as a more casual and edgy substitute for a more traditional cardigan.
Last but not least, a denim jacket layered over the button up shirt for the perfect finishing touch. Every woman should have a good 100% cotton denim jacket in their wardrobe. I got this one when I was in college and intend to have it for many years to come.
