Autumn Wishlist: On the Double

With the summer months come and gone and AW 2016 fashion month in full swing debuting the latest (but not always greatest) Autumn and Winter trends, I’m longing to pack up my summer gear and pull out my knits, leathers, and suedes. Unfortunately, indian summer in the District tends to linger on until mid October so I’ll be waiting at least a few more weeks before dawning the striped knits and block heeled boots I can’t wait to get my hands on. That said, because autumnal anticipation is as strong as a double shot pumpkin spice late, I’m already looking ahead to my fall wardrobe which typically consists of ankle boots, and transitional jackets and accessories layered over my summer cottons, linens, and denim.

As far as wardrobe additions go, the Autumn/Winter trends that I’m really feeling are:

  • Animal prints- There is a TON of leopard everywhere right now. I follow a number of fashion bloggers and I’m not kidding one day I woke up and the first ten photos in my feed were of bloggers in leopard print shoes. While I do love a good cat print, the print feels a bit tired to me. As an update to my personal wardrobe I’m looking to the snake print leather pieces, particularly in footwear. Black/white footwear is one of my favorite outfit making pieces, so a black and white snake print totally fits the bill.
  • Military detail- In addition to the endlessly elegant and cool cotton and knit breton tops, there are a lot of military inspired pieces coming out from designer and highstreet labels. Options are endless for great coats and pants with sharp military silhouettes and gold sailor buttons. This is a trend that in my opinion is always in style and you can’t go wrong investing in a good pea coat, sailor pant, or baker boy hat. For a good dose of fresh runway inspiration, check out the TommyxGigi Fall collection that just deputed at New York Fashion Week.
  • Denim on denim- Yes, the Canadian Tuxedo. I have always felt extremely hesitant to attempt this look. Do I double up similar or different washes? Based on observation, the fashion god’s do’s and don’ts for pairing denims seem to change quite often, so I say experiment with what you have and see if it works for you! It’s a great way to experiment with your favorite denims and update your look. As for me, I’m leaning towards teaming up not exact, but similar washes.
  • Embroidery- Typically I associate embroidery with spring/summer clothing, so perhaps an exquisitely embroidered pattern in rich Autumn hues and textural fabrics could make for a luxurious way to update your wardrobe for the upcoming months. I’m not much of a boho girl, but I do have an embroidered jacket that I adore yet don’t wear often because it’s slightly heavy and structural for a summer jacket and doesn’t go that well with my warm weather clothes. Hmm…

Hat– Scotch & Soda, Scarf- Ann Taylor, Dress- J.Crew, Jacket- Tommy Hilifiger, Shoes– J.Crew, Bag– Madewell
  • Pink on pink on pink- I think there are may be three things in my wardrobe that are pink, and they are probably closer to coral. I’ve always been a bit tomboy-esque and pink just never really appealed to me. However, as the only girl in a house full of boys, this Queen of the castle has been feeling the need, or more so the right, to be a bit girly. Not in a Professor Umbridge or Elle Woods sort of way,  but maybe with a spunky accessory or two.
